Signs You Need A Water Main Repair
A water main is the pipe that connects your home to the public water line where you get your clean water from. The public water line often runs down the road or down sidewalks. The water main connects to this line perpendicularly, carrying water under your yard or driveway into the home. If the public water line breaks, your water company is responsible for fixing it. However, if the water main breaks, it is your responsibility to repair it. Unfortunately, this line does not give many signs that it is about to break, burst or crack before the event happens. Once it does, you need to know what signs are indicative of water main problems so you can have the line repaired before you waste water and run up a sky high water bill. Here are a few of the signs that you may need water main repair.
Water is Puddling in Your Yard
The top sign of a water main issue is water puddling or pooling in your yard. If you notice puddles of water in your yard, and you have no idea where it is coming from, it may be coming from beneath the ground. If there is sewage mixed in with the water, or a strong odor, you may have a sewer line leak. If the water does not appear to be mixed with sewage, you may have a water main problem.
You Are Losing Water Pressure in Your Home
Another sign of a water main problem is a loss of water pressure. This is because you have a leak and all of the water that normally enters your home is no longer entering your home. Unfortunately, there are many problems that can cause a loss of water pressure, including a clogged plumbing stack and a leak in the pipes within your home. However, if you notice a decrease in water pressure throughout your entire house, rather than just one shower or one faucet, the problem is likely related to your water main.
Your Water Bill Has Jumped Drastically
The last sign of a water main issue is an increase in your water bill. If you have a water main leak, water may slowly leak from the pipe. You may not notice water puddling or pooling in your yard because there is not enough water leaking. But, since you are losing water, your water bill will likely be much higher. If you notice an increase in your water bill and you do not know why, you may have a leak somewhere in your home or in your water main line.
If you are showing any signs that your water main line may be damaged, you will want to call a plumber to examine the line and repair it. A plumber can determine if you do indeed have a water main line problem and how to properly fix it so you are not losing water any longer.
